5 Gyres is a nonprofit on a mission to reduce the amount of plastic pollution in our environment. Plastic poses risks to our future survival but we have the power to change that. Our mission is to empower action against the global health crisis of plastic pollution through science, education, and adventure. What we've achieved: Launched 19 ocean research expeditions, obtaining never before known statistics about plastic pollution. Passed the first ever state microbead legislation. Created a Youth Summit, inspiring the next generation of plastic fighters. Performed unprecedented research finding massive plastic microbead pollution in the Great Lakes. Co-sponsored a national microbead bill that become the Microbeads Free Water Act of 2016. Created international education and awareness of ocean plastic pollution. Restored habitats with international beach clean ups. Pressured 16 major cosmetic companies to remove microbeads from their products. learn more at www.5gyres.org
