奈良文化財研究所は、文化財を総合的に研究するための機関です。 奈良は南都と呼ばれる古都で、多数の古建築や古美術品が残ることから、これらを総合的に研究するのが設立の目的です。 1960年代からは、平城宮跡の保存問題を契機に、平城地区と飛鳥・藤原地区で宮跡等の発掘調査と研究を進めてきました。 また、全国各地や世界の貴重な遺跡や遺物を守り、さらに、文化財の保存・修復・整備に関する研究にも力を入れています。 当研究所では、平城宮跡資料館や藤原宮跡資料室、飛鳥資料館において、調査・研究の成果を発信しています。
