Food channel from Hawai‘i In the islands the word for food is ‘ai. Plural it's ‘āina, the word for land. So the land is the food, ALL the food. What distinction is there between life and food and the world? Food is the word, and the living food is the world itself. Pele, akua of volcanoes, is "ka wahine ‘ai honua"-- the earth-eating woman. She is the mouth that swallows and speaks, both devours the land and births it. Our bodies, too, living on the larger body that is the island, are consumed in the endless process to create new bodies. And so... the world is eating itself, nourishing itself with itself. ‘Ohana, meaning family, comes from ‘oha, the young shoots of the kalo plant-- the staple of Hawai‘i. When you harvest the body of the plant, its shoots grow into the next mother. Likewise our human families and their genealogies. New Videos. Weekends. From Hawai‘i island, we will eat… and be eaten.
